Ross Davies presented the youth category winner of the 2024 Earth Day photography contest, which went to nine-year-old Tallis McRobbie.

The poetry and photography contests are open for submissions for this years Celebrate Earth Day event.

'Stories' is the theme for 2025, sharing stories about the environment, nature, and loving the earth.

The contests will be divided into three categories – children up to the age of 10; youth from 11 years to 16 years; and adults 17 years and older.

All photo contest entries will be posted online for the community to vote for the winners.

Winners will be chosen in each category, plus there will be a grand prize winner.

“Each year we see some really incredible photos,” said contest coordinator Ross Davies with the Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society.

“It’s a lot of fun seeing the community choose their favourite images online,” he added.

The Poetry and More contest will have three winners in each category. Participants can enter poetry, flash fiction, songs, short stories, and videos.

Flash fiction, also known as a “microstory,” is a story where there is a plot with developed characters and setting, but with a word count of up to only 500.

These entries could have as few as 100 words, even as low as six words said Poetry and More contest coordinator Ronda Payne.

"I love seeing the entries come in each year,” noted Payne. “The amount of talent in our community and throughout BC is amazing.”

Poetry and More contest winners may be asked to share their creations at the Celebrate Earth Day Festival Welcoming Ceremonies which start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 on the main stage in front of the ACT Arts Centre. Or they may be published.

Deadline for submissions for both contests is midnight on Monday, March 31.

Entries to the photo contest should be in jpg format, a minimum of 1MB, with the name and age of the photographer, if under the age of 17. They can be emailed to: r.davies@shaw.ca.

Poetry contest entries can be emailed to: EarthDayCreative2021@gmail.com.
