Students at Maple Ridge Secondary School held their annual food drive for the Friends In Need Food Bank on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

There has been a tremendous increase in the need at the Friends In Need Food Bank and they are struggling to keep up with the demand.

New registration numbers are up almost 30 per cent, said Evan Seal, general manager of the food bank in Maple Ridge.

"And, we have seen no decline in the number of current clients," he said.

Seal said about 35 per cent of their clients are children up to the age of 18 and 25 per cent are seniors.

And, added Seal, although the community has always been very generous, food drives are down this year compared to previous years.

"We serve approximately 800 families every week and there seems to be no end in sight," he said.

Recently students at Maple Ridge Secondary School held their annual food drive and collected 450 pounds of non-perishable food items and $1,975 in cash donations for the food bank.

"It was really successful and we are so grateful for our community," said Kris Crawford with the high school.

The Friends In Need Food Bank has been serving the community for three decades by providing nutritious food to those in need.
