This weekend, July 5 and 6, the Maple Ridge Museum and Archives is hosting walking tours.

Saturday will feature a walk in the Maple Ridge Cemetery exploring its historic values.

Maple Ridge has one of the oldest continuously operated cemeteries in the Lower Mainland. Visitors will explore a variety of settler families with the oldest burials being at the southern end. The tour will also look at design and symbolism, as well as the different types of materials used in the grave markers and how they hold up over time.  The 75-minute tour begins at 2 p.m.

Sunday will bring a tour of the downtown. The Maple Ridge has a fascinating history, filled with stories from diverse cultural groups who supported some successful local business and industries. The walking tour of the downtown area offers information about how our city came to be.

Families are welcome, but this tour is more suited for teens and adults, as it includes an in-depth discussion of history. It might not be of interest to young children.

Those taking part will meet at the horse clock outside City Hall five minutes before 2 p.m., for the 75 minute tour.

For information email engage@mapleridgemuseum.org with the subject “Walking Tour” or phone the museum at 604-463-5311. There is a signup online at mapleridgemuseum.org.

There will be future tours on Aug. 2 and 3, and Sept. 6 and 7.
