Members of both the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows fire departments will be out on Saturday, Dec. 14, for the Firefighter For Families campaign.

Firefighters will have a visible presence across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows this Saturday, Dec. 14, as they collect donations for charity.

The Firefighters For Families campaign will be taking place collecting money, new toys, and non-perishable food items to help those in need in the community this holiday season.

All toys collected will go to the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, and food to the Friends In Need Food Bank.

Cash donations will be split between both charities.

"Our helping in this worthwhile cause shows that we truly care about our community.  We want to create a better standard of living for people who may be struggling within the City of Maple Ridge," said assistant chief James Clelland.

"Another reason is that providing food to those in need, can help fortify the City against the spread of diseases, reduces the risk of illnesses, and hopefully lowers the risk of people developing chronic illnesses later in life," he added.

Maple Ridge firefighters will be holding out their boots in front of six locations across the city.

They will be outside the three Save-On-Foods locations: at 240 Street and Dewdney Trunk Road; at 227 Street and Lougheed Highway; and at 203 Street and Lougheed Highway. They will also be collecting donations at: FreshCo, 202 Street and Dewdney Trunk Road; No Frills, Dewdney Trunk Road and 224 Street; and outside Walmart at Haney Place Mall.

Pitt Meadows firefighters will also be collecting donations. They will be outside Real Canadian Superstore and Tim Hortons in Meadowtown Centre, and outside the Starbucks, Save-On-Foods, and Shoppers Drug Mart in the Meadow Vale Shopping Centre.

Firefighers For Families takes place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14.
