Schools across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have been running to raise money for cancer research.
About $30,485.60 has been raised, so far, at 18 schools across the district.
Students at Yennadon Elementary raised the most money, about $6,369.15, at their run on Friday, Sept. 27.
Principal Gary Lozinski said the entire school took part in the run – more than 700 students.
This year Lozinski noted they had BCEHS at the school with an ambulance which the primary students were able to tour and interact with the first responders.
The Ridge Meadows RCMP also took part.
"Two of them were actually dressed up in inflatable shark costumes, who ran with the students, which was surprising because their legs were all short for the entire distance," explained Lozinski, due to the officer's costumes. And, he said, the students loved the creativity and enthusiasm the police brought to the event.
Another officer brought tactical gear with them.
"It's a pretty big event at Yennadon," said Lozinski of the run, as it emphasizes the importance of community and contribution and highlights the importance of positivity and the power to impact change in the world.
"We know there are families in our community that have been impacted by cancer…supporting cancer research is a way to stand alongside them," said Lozinski.
The Yennadon PAC were out as well, handing out orange slices and granola bars to the runners.
A majority of the students ran five kilometres. The primary students did a less distance of two laps around the school field.
Students are encouraged to wear stickers on their clothing to let others know who they are running for. This simple act, said Lozinski, brings awareness to the disease's devastating impact on families.
"It makes it real for them," he said of his students.
Some people say they are running for their mother or father or grandparents, aunts or uncles. However, it's really sad, he said, when they are running for their sisters or brothers.
"It really does give a sense of how important this is to the community," he said.
"I am incredibly proud to be a part of our Yennadon school community. The funds raised by our school’s families, students, and staff highlight the impact we can make when we come together. Contributing positively to a cause that is bigger than themselves is an important lesson for our students to experience."
Not all SD42 schools held a Terry Fox Run in September or October. Others will be holding theirs in April of next year.
All money raised goes towards cancer research to find a cure for the disease.
