New concrete barriers make highway through Maple Ridge safer

$2-million project will help prevent head-on collisions

Lougheed Highway will be safer with concrete barriers.

Work has started on a median barrier project along Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge.

Crews began the work this week along the 6.6-kilometre stretch of the highway stretching from 240th to 272nd streets.

The $2 million-project will divide the four-lane highway and is expected to prevent head-on collisions and other crossover incidents.

Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton said in a press release that the median is a welcome safety upgrade, especially when it’s hard to see at night or in bad weather.

The project will be delivered in two phases. The first phase will see median barriers installed from River Road to Spilsbury Road, finishing by early March.

The second phase, which will get underway in the summer, will include the remainder of the barrier along the corridor, the minor widening of six intersections to include safe left-turn movements and the construction of a protected ’T’ intersection at the truck pullout to provide turnaround opportunities.

The project is expected to be finished in the fall.
