The City of Maple Ridge will be getting $20,000 to upgrade existing crosswalks with solar rectangular rapid flashing beacons.

A new rectangular rapid flash beacon crosswalk is to be installed in Pitt Meadows.

The province announced on Wednesday, April 23, the city would be receiving $20,000 for the crossing to increase pedestrian safety at Ford Road and 190A Street, a crosswalk that is within a 500 metre radius to a retirement community and several daycares.

Another $20,000 will also be going to the City of Maple Ridge to upgrade existing crosswalks with solar rectangular rapid flashing beacons.

"Everyone should be able to get around their neighbourhood safely, which is why we're investing in pedestrian crossing improvements," said Minister Lisa Beare, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. "Improving safety also encourages more people to choose healthy, active modes of transportation that are better for our planet.”

These improvements will provide highly visible, user activated flashing lights, making crossings safer and more accessible, said Beare.

The funds for road safety is part of a Vision Zero grant which have been awarded to communities across the province for the past four years.

Almost $800,000 has been given out to support projects in 50 communities, including 15 First Nations projects.

Projects include crosswalks, lighting, speed reduction measures, traffic monitoring, visibility improvements, and more.
