Music and laughter could be heard from every corner of downtown Maple Ridge on Saturday as thousands gathered to celebrate the city's 150th anniversary.
The Our Neck of the Woods celebration included a wide selection of entertainment, ranging from games and shopping to a zipline that took brave patrons flying down 224 Street.
There were also big-name bands that entertained the crowds, including country music star Aaron Pritchett and Juno Award-winning rock band The Strumbellas.
To kick off the event, Mayor Dan Ruimy and several other politicians spoke about the city and the excitement of being able to celebrate its 150th anniversary.
"This event is a way for those of us who live here to celebrate this special place and invite our friends and families and neighbours from the region to experience the history, beauty, and hospitality of our community, and see firsthand what is so fantastic about Maple Ridge," said Ruimy.
Even though the city was first incorporated 150 years ago, Ruimy recognized that the history of the area extends back much farther than that.
"As the banners all around our city note, the Katzie First Nation and the Kwantlen First Nation have been stewards of this land from time immemorial," he said. "And we have been immensely proud to have worked with First Nations to shine a spotlight on the history and culture of their nations."
