Maple Ridge council has approved a Pride sidewalk to be painted on to 224th Street at the entrance to Memorial Peace Park.

The project, for which $6,000 has been budgeted, will be done this month in time for Pride events in Vancouver.

“I think this will be a demonstration of our commitment to inclusion in our community,” Coun. Craig Speirs said at a council meeting.

The recommendation for the location got unanimous support after being decided on earlier this month in the wake of the 49 people killed in a mass shooting in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla. on June 12.

“I think it’s fantastic that we made this initiative,” said Coun. Kiersten Duncan.

It’s important that people feel safe in their community and she wanted to make sure that all feel loved and respected.
