The Emerald Pig Theatrical Society is presenting a heartwarming story about a couple's venture into retirement life and how their differing dreams lead to an eye-opening journey.
Set in the early 1980s, 'The Tomorrow Box' is a story about a farmer named Jack Cooper, who, after more than four decades of working a farm in Ontario, decides to retire and move to Miami, Florida.
He sells the farm to his son Joe and Joe's new bride Alice, and decides to auction off all their possessions for the move.
However, he fails to consult with his wife Maureen, who is brokenhearted they are going to leave their home, which she has spent lovingly maintaining all those years, in addition to the farm, and raising their six children.
Maureen feels helpless, thinking she will have to leave because her place is by her husband's side.
Until, her daughter-in-law Alice, and Alice's sister Lisa, who is an activist, feminist lawyer, open her eyes to the fact that she does have legal rights of her own.
They urge her to go through the court system to assert her rights, but do they really have her best interests in mind?
Written by Canadian playwright Anne Chislett, 'The Tomorrow Box' is a humourous and touching story that is unveiled as Maureen decides to stay and fight to remain in the home she loves.
"A Tomorrow Box is a term used at estate auctions where the auctioneer places items of little or no perceived value into a box which is then put up for bid, sight unseen," explained director Simon Challenger, president of Emerald Pig.
Usually what is included in these boxes are mementos or mundane household possessions, he explained, and they often held great significance to the person who owned them.
The play, he added, draws attention to women's rights and value in society.
The cast features Pitt Meadows resident Dominic Renaud as Joe Cooper, Aliocha Perriard-Abdoh as Alice Cooper, Pitt Meadows resident Diane Tzingounakis as Maureen Cooper, Maple Ridge resident Karen Horne as Lisa Graham, and Chuck Mayne as Jack Cooper.
