Ridge, Pitt schools win recycling prizes

Maple Ridge secondary and Pitt Meadows elementary both third place in respective school enrollment categories.

Maple Ridge secondary and Pitt Meadows elementary both took third place in their respective school enrollment categories for outstanding beverage container recycling.

Maple Ridge secondary diverted 55,745 containers from landfills, netting $3,237.94 in deposit refunds and $500 in prize money during Encorp Pacific 2011/2012 B.C. School Recycling Program.

Pitt Meadows elementary collected 30,999 containers, earning $$1,588.50 in deposit refunds and $500 in prize money.

“All the money raised by the students, teachers and parents stays with the school and goes towards enhancing student programs and the purchasing of equipment,” said Sandy Sigmund of Encorp Pacific.

Since the program’s inception in 2000, more than 40 million containers have been recycled and B.C. schools have been refunded more than $2.4 million.

Other highlights:

• Thomas Haney Centre saved 23,301 beverage containers from the waste stream, earning $1,169.85 towards school activities and equipment.

• Whonnock elementary collected 4,226 containers, earning $219.40 in deposit refunds.
