If you are looking for something to do on Sunday, Ian McLeod will be doing two walking tours of old Port Haney during Port Haney Day, which is focused at the Port Haney Wharf this year.
“From about 1870 to 1920, Port Haney was the commercial hub of the District of Maple Ridge, with a busy railway station and active river trade,” said Val Patenaude, director of the Maple Ridge Museum.
“But a series of fires devastated the aging buildings in the port, and with the opening of the Lougheed Highway around 1930, commercial activity moved north to its present town centre location.”
As part of Port Haney Day on Sunday, McLeod has prepared a short walk from the river to the highway and back to consider Port Haney’s history.
“We’ll look at relics of the old and not-so-old days.”
The free tours goes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., starting at Port Haney Wharf.
MacLeod is a resident of Port Haney and the co-author of Aesthetic Maple Ridge, a mini-book about development patterns in Maple Ridge.
Both the museum and Haney House will be open during this event.
