Tickets on sale for Rotary Duck Race

Dozens of community groups are selling tickets for the Rotary Duck Race.

The 1st Haney Scouts have 1,100 tickets for sale for the upcoming 13th annual Rotary Duck Race and they are hoping to sell every last one of them to raise money for much-needed equipment and programming.

In fact, 29 different community groups are doing the same, each raising money for their own groups and organizations.

Organizations like the Alouette River Management Society, Kids Sport Maple Ridge, the North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association, Ridge Meadows Speed Skating club, the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society, and more.

Tickets are $10 each with 80 per cent going towards the group selling the tickets. Each ticket will get a person one rubber duck in the race held along the Alouette River in Maple Ridge Park. The goal is to have 10,000 ducks racing along the river, to raise a total of $100,000.

David Meunier, group commissioner with the 1st Haney Scouts, said this is their second big fundraiser of the year, after the Christmas tree chipping fundraiser in the New Year.

He said they are looking to purchase about another dozen tents for camping trips for the children, as the older ones are starting to wear out, and other camping equipment like stoves that they often have to repair or replace.

A good chunk of the money will also be going to fund upcoming events like a camp the Scouts will be going to in October.

"Some of the money will go towards paying for that camp for the youth who help sell duck race tickets with their parents," he said.

The grand prize is $15,000 cash. Second prize is $1,200 cash and a $1,200 shopping spree at Mark's. Third is a $1,500 gift certificate to Save On Foods. Fourth is 10 rounds of golf and five carts at Meadow Gardens Golf Club valued at $1,250. Fifth prize is a big screen 65 inch smart TV valued at $1,099 from Haney Appliance and Sound.

Different groups will be outside London Drugs every Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. selling tickets for the race. The 1st Haney Scouts will be selling their tickets outside the store in ValleyFair Mall on Saturday, June 22.

Tickets can also be purchased at:

• The Haney Farmers Market every Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Memorial Peace Park, downtown Maple Ridge

• The Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Country Fest

Race day is Sunday, Aug. 11, with festivities starting at 11 a.m. and the race at 1 p.m. in the park on the corner of 232 Street and Fern Crescent.
