Time capsule unveiling at Maple Ridge school

Squirreled away in the dark recesses of the boiler room at Yennadon elementary in Maple Ridge hides a dusty link to the past.

There sits a Rubbermaid bin, containing the hopes, dreams and wishes of the Class of 2001. Ten years ago, the Grade 6 and 7 students at the school collected newspapers, trinkets, and recorded a video to include in the time capsule.

They also penned letters to their future selves. Some described their lives in detail, in case their future selves forgot what it was like to be 12 years old.

Others wrote about where they wanted their futures selves to be at age 22, what they hoped to achieve, and who they hoped to be.

“We asked them to write about their hopes and dreams and what’s important to you,” said former Yennadon teacher Jon Wheatley, now the principal at Eric Langton elementary.

He, along with teacher Nina Fowell, took part in the time capsule project with their classes 10 years ago.

The school plans to unveil the time capsule April 15 (3:30 p.m.), and all Grade 6 and 7 students who attended Yennadon at the time, as well as any teachers and staff at the school are welcome to attend.

“We are all really looking forward to catching up with the kids, and seeing where they are at,” said Wheatley.
