Local Mounties are holding an open house this month to celebrate the RCMP’s 150th anniversary.
Wendy Mehat, officer in charge of the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment, is personally inviting everyone in the community to join in the festivities.
It will be a family friendly event, she said, showcasing all of the policing teams along with the detachment.
The event will include the integrated police dog services, a police helicopter fly over, the emergency response team will have an armoured vehicle on site, and the integrated forensic identification services. A TAC truck will be on site, as well as a police motorcycle, the explosives disposal unit, the underwater recovery team, and the combined forces special enforcement unit.
Throughout the day there will be mock investigations for children to participate in.
This will include a brief presentation on what police do and how they solve crimes, explained Cpl. Julie Klaussner.
Participants can also tour the detachment and prison cells and have a quick chat with the watch commander on shift for the day.
Following that there will be a mock kid-friendly crime scene, said Klaussner, and the children will be given a notebook to investigate the crime by visiting the booths of the policing teams on site and collecting stickers for their notebooks.
Once the participants have concluded their investigation and their notebooks are complete, each child investigator will attend the Information booth where they will be given a ballot to enter a prize draw.
However, space is limited, “so please ensure that if you have a child who would like to participate that they sign in at the information booth,” Klaussner recommended.
In addition to the RCMP, other emergency response agencies such as Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue and Ridge Meadows Search & Rescue will be on hand at the event. Maple Ridge bylaws department and representatives from ICBC and the City of Maple Ridge will also be present.
There will be a carnival corner and treats for the family including: cotton candy, ice cream, and doughnuts.
The open house will be taking place from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, in Memorial Peace Park, located along 224th Street between Dewdney Trunk Road and Lougheed Highway.
Opening ceremonies will take place at 12:30 p.m.
