Volunteers make the community a better place and many organizations need more people willing to give up their time for a good cause.

For anyone who has been thinking of becoming a volunteer, they can check out the free Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Volunteer Fair coming up at the Maple Ridge Public Library.

"This much-anticipated event, once a staple in our community, is making its return to bring together non-profits, community organizations, service clubs, and residents of all ages who are ready to make a difference," said Christina Shearme with the Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows Katzie Seniors Network, one of the hosts of the event.

"Attendees can explore dozens of ways to get involved— whether you're looking for a one-time event or a long-term role, there’s something for everyone," added Shearme.

Information about volunteering opportunities open to all ages and abilities will at the event.  And, attendees will be able to network with organizations and connect with the local community.

Shearme noted there is a growing demand for volunteers especially among: youth in Grades 10 to 12 who are looking to give back, gain experience, and fulfill community service hours for graduation; seniors who are the backbone of the local volunteer force and play a critical role in the success of major community events; newcomers to the community who want to learn about the culture and learn English; and stay-at-home parents who are looking for ways to connect with the community.

The Community Volunteer Fair is more than just information, she said, it is about sparking meaningful connections.

Shearme noted youth find ways to fulfill their graduation requirements, seniors are able to stay active, social, and involved, and local organizations find the helping hands that they need – which, in turn, fosters a stronger sense of togetherness within the community.

The event is also being put on with support from: Ridge Meadows Foundry; SD42; and the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Community Network.

The Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Volunteer Fair will be taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, at 130-22470 Dewdney Trunk Road, Maple Ridge.
