Winners were announced at the 18th annual Business Excellence Awards that took place Saturday evening at Meadow Gardens Golf Club in Pitt Meadows.

Cheri Hamm with The Place to Mortgage, won Business Leader of the Year and said it was the biggest award and compliment that she could ever receive.

“That, you know, people sort of feel that I am a good business leader and setting a good example and so I am super honoured by it,” she said.

Hamm has attended the event in the past and has been nominated previously for the award.

This year, though, she wasn’t able to attend. But she had friends who could and called her when the category she was nominated in was being announced so that she could watch everything as it was going on.

“I had to watch it on my phone,” she laughed.

“The whole crowd was waving and clapping and saying congratulations,” noted Hamm.

She doesn’t know who nominated her. But, Hamm is a member of a women in business group who typically nominate one another for various awards.

“I have a feeling that that is where that one originated from,” she said.

Mark Vosper, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, said the evening was a memorable one.

“It went well. Everyone had a really good time,” he said of the award night that saw 115 attendees.

“People hadn’t socialized on that scale for two years. And, of course, they had a chance to dress up, to have a drink, have a dance,” he added.

The night featured Allegro Music who provided the live music, dancing, and a door prize for a free five night stay at Mayan Palace at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta in Mexico.

Vosper added that he felt honoured to be part of the awards ceremony and to see the wealth of business talent and community leadership shown in all of the finalists and nominees.

“To have the award winners recognized tonight in front of our top business and community leaders, will live with them forever,” he added.

Winners in the other six categories were:

Small Business of the Year went to Town and Country Vintage

Medium Business of the Year went to Meadows Landscape Supply Ltd.

Large Business of the Year went to Johnston Meier Insurance Agencies Group

Non Profit went to Ridge Meadows Senior’s Society

Community Spirit went to Bouquets for Baba

Professional Under 40 went to Troy Macbeth Abromaitis with Bucci Investment Corp
