An oil pipeline is being installed under an unsuspecting affluent suburb in the short film No Reservations, filmed in Maple Ridge.

A house in Silver Valley was used as a backdrop for the satirical film that had to be shot, edited and cut in eight days for the annual film festival Crazy8s.

This was the first entry into the festival for the film’s producer Benjamin Mallin, who said it was a simple idea for the contest that his team felt could generate interest.

He described it as an “a-ha” moment for writer and director Trevor Carroll, while he was throwing around ideas.

“It was the perfect storm of story, controversy, marketability and collaboration,” said the producer.

“Once we locked the script, Trevor submitted pages to a handful of carefully selected eyes for their thoughts. We got their seal of approval and knew we had something,” he said.

“No Reservations is an attempt to show an extreme perspective on one of the most major headlines in recent memory and to spark a conversation,” Mallin continued.

Crazy8s was created in 1999 to provide support to emerging filmmakers and help foster a vibrant local industry.

It is Vancouver’s most prestigious fast filmmaking event.

Every year, six teams are selected for the event.

Since its inception, 97 films have been created that have played at film festivals worldwide and helped launched the careers of many award-winning filmmakers.

The opening gala takes place Feb. 25 at the Centre for Performing Arts in Vancouver, where the finished films will be viewed for the first time.
