When David’s mother is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he resolves to unravel a mystery that has haunted him for years.

Why did she, a gifted and successful painter, abandon her art so abruptly two decades ago? Was her decision related to her current condition? Is David destined to share her fate?

With quiet humour and compassion, Scar Tissue meditates on the connection between family, memory, and identity.

Dennis Foon’s stage adaptation of Michael Ignatieff’s novel Scar Tissue is one of the Arts Club’s Silver Commissions—a program launched by the company in 2006 with the generous support of Stan and Kathy Hamilton and, with the support of long-time donor, Bonnie Mah, continues to commission new plays for the Arts Club’s stages.

A playwright, novelist, and screenwriter, Foon’s work has received awards and accolades across the globe.

As the founding artistic director of Vancouver’s acclaimed Green Thumb Theatre, Foon has written over 20 award-winning plays and his novels include Double or Nothing and the Sheila A. Egoff Award–winning Skud.

He has received a Gemini, two WGC Screenwriting Awards, and the Robert Wagner Award for his screenplays, which include Little Criminals and the international Emmy nominee White Lies. Life Above All, his screenplay directed by Oliver Schmitz, won the Prix Francois Chalais award at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. His feature film, A Shine of Rainbows, premiered at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, played at over 30 international film festivals, and won 11 awards.

Michael Ignatieff is renowned as an academic, television personality, screenwriter, and novelist throughout Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. He served as the leader of the Canadian Liberal Party between late 2008 and 2011.
