Janet Love Morrison will be signing copies of Radar the Rescue Dog at Black Bond Books in Maple Ridge on Sunday, Nov. 20.

In 1978, Radar was Whistler’s first avalanche rescue dog.

His home was Whistler and his owner was Bruce Watt, one of the original founders of the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association.

Morrison wrote the book to teach kids to be safe in the outdoors and to stand in their power and say “no” when someone tries to influence them to do something they don’t want to do.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote the foreword. His brother Michel was tragically killed in an avalanche in November 1998. Since then, the Trudeau family has participated in mountain awareness.

Radar is endorsed by the Canadian Avalanche Foundation; the Canadian Ski Patrol; the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association; Whistler Search and Rescue; and Dave Irwin and Steve Podborski of the famed Crazy Canucks.

“Since the book’s release in 2012, I’ve donated two-thirds of the royalties to CARDA – $3,000,” said Morrison.

“Plus, I’ve visited so many schools between Revelstoke and Vancouver and several ski areas as well. It’s been very well received and I’m very grateful.”

• Morrison will be signing books at the book store in Haney Place Mall on Nov. 20. 1 p.m. She’ll also read from it at Maple Ridge Public Library on Dec. 7.
