Movies are often a family activity, but for many families that have children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental disorders, they can turn out to be a bit of a nightmare.
That's because these types of disabilities frequently result in trouble processing sensory inputs properly, meaning that they can be easily overstimulated by too much noise, light, sound, or other stimulus.
To make movies more accessible to everyone, Hollywood 3 Cinemas Pitt Meadows is offering a sensory-friendly viewing of "Hotel Transylvania" this Halloween season.
For only $15 per person, moviegoers will get to experience the film with lower sound, brighter lights, and the ability to enter and exit the theatre whenever they want. This ticket price will also include a soft drink and popcorn.
Not only does this event make movies more accessible for people who suffer from stimulus sensitivity, but it also helps to support a good cause, explained Down Syndrome Resource Foundation senior philanthropy officer Julia Watt.
"All proceeds from this event support the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation and our DownRight Spooky Trick-or-Treat Meet and Greet," said Watt. "The DSRF’s DownRight Spooky Trick-or-Treat Meet and Greet is an opportunity for our students to practice trick-or-treating in a safe, familiar, and sensory-friendly environment as a warm-up to the big night."
Anyone wanting to participate in this fundraiser can visit the Hollywood 3 Cinemas Pitt Meadows on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
