Samuel Robertson Technical School students perform at last year’s School of Rock concert. The 2013 class host a year-end show Friday at the ACT.

Summer’s almost here and Samuel Robertson Technical is set to showcase the talented musicians from its School of Rock.

“There’s a real sense of community this year,” says music teacher Wes Reamsbottom.

“They are so supportive of each other and I think it’s making them better. It’s not competitive, but more like a family. They’ve been a joy to teach.”

Reamsbottom started the “school of rock” nine years ago as a club.

It’s since grown into a regular high school course that’s set to be taught over seven blocks next year.

Almost Famous, which features Reamsbottom and another SRT teacher Steve Halfnights, will open Friday’s year-end concert.

The concert will also showcase four student bands: Prairie Fire Gospel Choir, a roots-indie-rock band; Check 43, a high energy rock band with two female lead vocalists; Make-Shift Chemistry, which also features a female vocalist and Francis and The Cool Cats, led by Francis Belanger, a multi-instrumentalist.

• The School of Rock concert takes place Friday, June 7 at the ACT in Maple Ridge. Tickets (Adults $16; Students $9.50) are available at the door. The show starts at 7 p.m.
