Castle Sewing Centre is marking 83 years in business with a major anniversary celebration.
“This business has been in our family since 1942,” says co-owner Stephannie Bulman. “We’ve stayed true to our roots as a local, Canadian-owned store, and we’re proud to continue serving the Lower Mainland sewing community.”
Originally founded in New Westminster by Stephannie’s husband’s grandfather, James Castle, the company began as a wartime repair service, fixing and reselling sewing machines. In the 1960s, Castle moved the business to Surrey, operating on the Fraser Highway, in Clayton Heights, until 2023 when SkyTrain expansion prompted a relocation. Today, Castle Sewing calls 19748 86 Avenue in Langley home Castle’s long-standing philosophy is to support sewing at every level with quality products and a focus on customer service.
Now in its third generation, the business remains a full-time, hands-on operation. “Our daughter Emily joined the team about four years ago,” Stephannie says. “We’re here six days a week.” Castle Sewing also runs a full-service centre staffed by four factory-trained technicians, each with over 40 years of experience. Customers who purchase a machine receive complimentary machine orientation instruction and lifetime support.

“We’re problem-solvers. It’s in our DNA,” Stephannie says. “People bring in machines with missing parts and ask, ‘Can this be fixed?’ We always do our best to say ‘yes!’”
Castle Sewing carries a wide range of machines, from beginner models to advanced embroidery and quilting systems by Brother, Pfaff, Janome, Bernina and more. The shop also stocks high-quality cotton fabric, accessories and hosts popular workshops and sewing classes.
“We offer everything from beginner classes – making simple projects like bucket hats or pyjama pants – to advanced quilting retreats,” Stephannie says. “We also bring in educators from major brands to teach fun and informative workshops, so our customers always feel confident using their machines.”
Castle’s spacious classroom is fully equipped with machines that are available at no additional cost with class registration. They also provide online email support and a toll-free number (1-800-284-6680) for out-of-town customers – Stephannie adds that phone calls to their direct line (604-574-5333) remain the best way to reach them.
“Customer service is our number one priority,” Stephannie says. “We want everyone who walks through our doors to feel supported – during and after the sale.”
