The City of Maple Ride is promoting emergency preparedness through six coming workshops.

The first Be Emergency Ready event happens on Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Albion Community Centre. The workshops are designed to help residents prepare for emergencies, and learn about hazards, putting together emergency kids, staying safe during disasters, and making family emergency plans.

All of the workshops are free, and last about 90 minutes.

There are three evening workshops, starting at 6 p.m. at the Albion Community Centre (24165-104th Ave.), on Jan. 9, Feb. 18, and March 18.

Spaces are limited and those wanting to register must do so online at eventbrite.ca

There are also three afternoon workshops at the Maple Ridge Public Library and they will happen at 2 p.m. on Jan. 14, Feb. 11, and March 11. Again, registration is available on eventbrite.ca

The city advises residents to prepare the neighbourhood for emergencies by connecting with their neighbours, and has an online neighbourhood preparedness guide.

The municipality endorses a standard that people to be prepared to support their family for 72 hours after a disaster, as it could take days or weeks before services are fully restored. Some ready-made kids are available for purchase locally or online. The city provides online resources, including a pet emergency kit.

There is information about the city's approach to emergency preparedness and response at mapleridge.ca.
