An allegedly impaired driver hit and injured a cyclist in downtown Maple Ridge on Monday evening, July 8, then fled the scene.
Witnesses got a licence plate, and the driver was located by police and arrested.
According to Ridge Meadows RCMP, at approximately 5:30 p.m. they responded to a report of a hit-and-run incident, where the victim was struck and left unconscious near the intersection of 224 Street and Selkirk Avenue, in front of the Walmart store.
When police arrived, the cyclist was being attended to by paramedics and members of Maple Ridge Fire and Rescue. The cyclist regained consciousness and was taken to hospital in a BC Emergency Health Services ambulance.
Police spoke with witnesses, and obtained the BC license plate of the vehicle that struck the cyclist. Officers located the vehicle and one person was arrested for operating a vehicle while impaired.
Access to 224 Street was restricted for much of the evening, with cruisers blocking access to the streets, and police tape spread across the intersection, while police investigated. The bike rested on a post nearby, and shoes and other items lay in the street, with police evidence markers nearby.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation, said RCMP.
