UPDATE: Driver goes airborne, crashes through Maple Ridge yards

Driver was able to walk away from Friday's crash

The driver of an SUV who got his vehicle airborne in a crash careened through Silver Valley backyards before coming to rest on his roof.

Witnesses were surprised and relieved to see the driver walk away from the spectacular crash.

It happened at approximately noon on Oct. 4, and the driver was northbound uphill at 232 Street. His tire tracks can be seen going off the left side of the road at Mier Driver, the entrance to the Bridle Ridge community.

His vehicle apparently ramped by an incline, it cleared the yard of the first house, flying over the fences, then crashed through the backyards and fences of three other properties, before coming to rest at the rear of the fifth or sixth house on the street. An online video of the vehicle soaring through the air has appeared online.

Neighbour Ron Quirk said the damage was "pretty substantial," with the last house struck getting the brunt of it.

The vehicle clipped his fence and left scrape marks on a rock wall at the rear of his property, then took out fences, awnings and backyard furnishings before it finally stopped.

Quirk said it was shocking the driver was not seriously injured or even killed.

"Apparently he got up and walked to the front of the house," he said.

There were no other people injured.

"Fortunately, no one was injured in any of the residential backyards," said Cpl. Brett Urano, Ridge Meadows RCMP spokesperson.

"The driver of the vehicle did suffer minor injuries and was taken to hospital."

Mounties are asking anyone with information, dash cam footage, or other video in the area Friday morning, Oct. 4, to contact Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251.
