Volunteers with the Lower Mainland Green Team and Maple Ridge's own Alouette River Management Society (ARMS) removed a large load of invasive species from a local waterway.

They hosted a community initiative to remove invasive blackberry plants earlier this month at the Trethewey Channel.

“Watching and listening to the younger members participating in this event really makes you see the learning and appreciation of nature that the LMGT provides. There’s nothing quite like getting a little muddy to discover and see what’s in the world around us,” said Naya Kohout, a Lower Mainland Green Team participant.

With 23 participants, they cleared three cubic metres of invasive plants from the Trethewey Channel, which will help to further improve this salmon habitat channel.

"It’s not just about removing invasive species – it's about building stronger, more connected communities," said Lyda Salatian, the founder of the Lower Mainland Green Team.

"Those engaged today came from a variety of backgrounds and municipalities, working together to improve the environment and strengthen their sense of belonging. It’s a win-win for both the planet and the people involved.”

The activity attracted participants from Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Vancouver, Burnaby, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Surrey, and Mission, demonstrating the power of cross-regional collaboration in environmental stewardship.

This activity was made possible by through the support of ARMS, who received funding from the Pacific Salmon Foundation, Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, and the Stewart Family Foundation. These partnerships were instrumental in ensuring the success of the restoration work at Trethewey Channel.
