Maple Ridge city council has rubber stamped its plan to allow free swimming in Hammond Pool this summer.

Starting this summer, all Maple Ridge residents can enjoy free admission to public drop-in swim sessions at the outdoor pool, following council’s approval of a new initiative to enhance community health and well-being.

The city estimated the loss in revenue at almost $16,000 for the summer.

“The lifeblood of any community is making sure our kids have something positive to do,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “Offering free outdoor swimming removes barriers and creates opportunities for families to stay active and connected. It helps keep our young people healthy and safe – while teaching them a life skill. This is about building an engaged, healthy community where everyone can participate.”

The free admission program applies to Maple Ridge residents only and includes public drop-in swims throughout the summer season. The program does not include aquafit, swim lessons, private rentals, and special events.

The pool opens for weekend swimming on May 25 and then daily starting June 29 until Sept. 9. For more information on pool hours and programming, visit MapleRidge.ca/HammondPool. For additional information, contact PRC@MapleRidge.ca.

Planning is underway for a new aquatics and recreation facility at Hammond Community Park to serve the community into the future. Learn more about this initiative and the next phase of engagement starting in the coming weeks at Engage.MapleRidge.ca/Move-Meet-Play.
