The City of Maple Ridge is creating a first-in-B.C. concierge service to help builders of priority projects navigate the approvals process more quickly.
This project management service will be available for "high impact" projects deemed strategically important, that bring dividends to the community, and have a multiplier effect in the benefits they bring, explained Georgia Gerontas, the manager of strategic programs, to city council at a recent meeting.
"I think it's going to definitely change the way we interact [with] and support our developers," she said. "And I think there's a lot of value both for the community, and for the development community."
"We believe strongly this program will help attract industry and investment, and make Maple Ridge a preferred destination for investment, partnership and development."
It will be available for industrial, commercial, mixed use, high-density residential, affordable housing and purpose-built rentals.
Mayor Dan Ruimy noted the project will be funded by grants under the federal Housing Accelerator Fund, which will give the city $16.6 million.
The pilot is scheduled for one year starting in September, with full implementation in October 2026. Developers will received personalized guidance, advice and support to developers for complex, multi-stage approvals processes.
"It's someone holding your hand through the complexities of the regulatory process," Gerontas explained. "It's targeted and tailored advice as they move through the approvals process."
Staff will help with zoning applications, development permits, variance permits and subdivision approvals.
The city will initially hire one new part-time project reviewer, and then a dedicated concierge. Both positions will be paid for by grants.
The program is scheduled to receive final approval from council on April 8.
