Maple Ridge city councillor Ahmed Yousef had two court appearances on Monday, June 9, in both Surrey and Port Coquitlam Provincial Courts.

Yousef is facing eight criminal charges, and by provincial legislation is on mandatory leave from his duties at city hall, with pay.

Ahmed Antar Yousef Mohamed, as his full name appears in court documents, faces a charge of pointing a firearm, four charges of assault, and one charge of unsafe storage of a firearm. These charges are being dealt with in Port Coquitlam provincial court.

The assault charges involve four different alleged victims. There is a ban on publication prohibiting the identification of victims or witnesses involved in these charges.

In Surrey provincial court, Yousef faces an additional two counts of disobeying a court order.

In both cases, the matters have been scheduled for their next hearing on June 26 at 9 a.m., in the respective courthouses.

There is no record of Yousef having entered a plea of not guilty, or guilty, in either case.

There can be numerous pre-trial court appearances, taking place over months, before a case is scheduled for trial.

None of the charges against Yousef have been tested in court, and a person accused of a crime is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
