Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows flags lowered for festival victims

The cities of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge lowered flags to honour those killed at the Lapu Lapu Festival in Vancouver.

The cities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows lowered flags to half mast, as the cities honour people killed at a Vancouver community event on Saturday, April 26.

Eleven people, aged five to 65, were killed at the Lapu Lapu Festival, and more than two dozen others injured, when a man drove an SUV into a crowd of people celebrating the Filipino festival near Fraser Street on East 43rd Avenue. An unknown number of people have serious injuries.

A 30-year-old Vancouver man was arrested at the scene by Vancouver Police after bystanders and witnesses intervened, according to a VPD press release. He faces murder charges.

"My heart is heavy, and I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the events at the Lapu-Lapu Festival," said Maple Ridge Mayor Dan Ruimy in a statement on Sunday morning. "On behalf of council and the city of Maple Ridge, I offer my sincere condolences to the families and everyone affected by this shocking tragedy.

"It is heartbreaking that a celebration of culture and community was struck by such devastation. Our hearts are with the Filipino Canadian community during this difficult time. We grieve with you and offer our full support."

The City of Pitt Meadows thanked the first responders who provided critical support during the incident.

"The city and our community extend our deepest condolences to everyone impacted by this tragedy," said a statement from Pitt Meadows. "Support is available for those in need. Visit the Government of British Columbia's social media channels for more information." 

The VPD is advising the public that 24-hour assistance centre has been established at the Douglas Park Community Centre, 801 West 22nd Ave. Police officers and Victim Services professionals have been deployed to help anyone who has not been able to contact a loved who was at the Lapu Lapu Festival.
