Work on some priority capital projects will be underway even before Pitt Meadows city council approves its 2025 budget this spring.

At the Ja. 14 meeting, city manager of financial planning Korey Holtzman presented councillors with a list of selected 2025 capital projects that need pre-approval, prior to council approving its budget.

Council gave the nod to the jobs that need to start before council's budget is finally adopted in May. The coming year will see the city undertake 108 capital projects totalling $38 million, and 37 of those costing $22 million required pre-approval.

Some are deemed high priority due to health and safety issues, or regulatory requirements, while others are deemed medium priority for cost savings or to generate revenue.

Some of the projects include:

$6.7 million to continue constructing two artificial turf fields and parking at Pitt Meadows Athletic Park

$4.5 million to continue building multi-sport box and field house at PMAP

$4.4 million for Heron's Nest child care facility

$400,000 for park playground upgrades

$950,000 for arena building and equipment upgrades

$905,00 for excavator replacement

$357,000 for repaving Rannie Road

$243,000 for desktop and laptop computer replacement.

"There's a lot of stuff happening all at once," noted Coun. Bob Meachen. "It does reflect what an amazing amount of work gets done out of such a small complement of staff."

Other major projects included in the capital budget this year include completion of the RCMP detachment building, water main work, a new Kennedy Pump Station for flood control, and a new rail monitoring and alert system at the Harris Road crossing.

Council's budget deliberations were concluded on Dec. 9, and the city passed a budget with a property tax and utility increase of $411 per year for the average single-family home.
