What is the most important issue facing voters in this election, and what should be done about it? (Maximum 200 word response)

The cost-of-living crisis is the most important issue facing Canadians today. Canadians are feeling the strain on their wallets across the board from housing costs to grocery prices to dealing with unjustified tariffs.

To address the housing crisis, The NDP will build three million more homes, including those at non-market value, by 2030 because access to safe, adequate housing is more than just a Canadian right, it is a human right. The NDP will also protect renters by cracking down on predatory and unscrupulous landlords in addition to pushing for affordable and rent-controlled homes on federal public land. The NDP will also work with Indigenous communities, Co-Ops and Non-Profit Developers to achieve these goals.

To help Canadian’s put food on the table, the NDP will cap grocery prices and remove the GST on essential items, thereby easing the day-to-day costs for hard-working Canadians.

The NDP tariff response will reject any deal that sells out Canadian jobs, resources and healthcare. Every dollar collected from retaliatory tariffs will directly support impacted workers in the steel, aluminum, and auto industries which will then be re-invested into infrastructure using Canadian steel & Canadian workers.

Bio: I was born in South Africa and grew up under Apartheid, where I witnessed firsthand the fear and rhetoric of extremist political parties. I am a military veteran and have served under the South African and British militaries, and am currently with the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves. Through these organizations, I served during the 1994 elections in South Africa that saw Nelson Mandela elected, conduced UN peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, helped allied nations rebuild in Iraq and worked with various NGO relief and humanitarian programs addressing healthcare, gender-based violence and food security across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Since moving to Vancouver, most of my career has been as the director of security for a minority community targeted by prejudice and misinformation.
