Popular Maple Ridge Afro Gala looking for larger venue

Organizer looking for venue that can accommodate larger crowds

Onyeka Dozie is looking for a new home for his popular Afro Gala.

With 350 people attending, and many more turned away, the organizer and Maple Ridge city councillor said the event has outgrown the rotunda at Thomas Haney Secondary school.

The cultural event was held on Saturday, Feb. 8, and featured food, dancing, awards and cultural entertainment.

"It went very well. It was quite impressive, and from the feedback I received, those attending had a nice time," he said.

Many of those who attended, including delegations from both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows city councils, donned traditional African garb, dished themselves some bright orange Nigerian jollof rice and other foods, and watched the entertainment.

"The primary objective is to connect people and cultures with a view to creating a harmonious and diverse community," said Dozie.

The event was founded by he and wife Linda in 2016, as an event to showcase and promote black/African cultural heritage. The gala also recognizes and honour people who have contributed to the development of the black community as part of a celebration of the Black History Month.

Dozie said he would like to bring the cost of tickets down, and find a venue that can attract a larger crowd. That might even mean moving the event to an outdoor venue, and holding it during the summer, he said.

"I know a lot of people who wanted to attend, but couldn't," he said.

The event attracts people from various ethic backgrounds, and honours and celebrates individuals who serve, volunteer and support development in black communities.

"The evening was filled with inspiring speeches, vibrant performances, stunning fashion, and well deserved awards," said Pitt Meadows city councillor Alison Evans in social media. "Grateful to be present at such a meaningful celebration. Huge thanks to the organizers for bringing this event to life!"
