As the Haney Farmers Market nears the end of its summer season, a number of unique events are being introduced to the weekly market.
On the second-last weekend of the season, there will be not one but two different food-related competitions happening.
The first of these is the inaugural blind food taste test, which pits 12 people up against one another as they attempt to taste some foods blindfolded and then guess what they are.
"Are you a fan of Hell's Kitchen and other cooking competition shows? Always wanted to test your taste buds? Now is your chance," wrote the Haney Farmers Market.
After three rounds of this blindfolded taste testing, a winner will be crowned and given a $50 gift certificate to the Haney Farmers Market.
According to the farmers market society, there will be no really hot dishes, and nearly all of the food items will be from market vendors, with only a couple of non-market surprise dishes.
In addition to the blindfolded taste test competition, there will also be a dessert-making event where bakers will bring their tastiest items down to the Oct. 19 market using mainly ingredients from the market vendors.
Anyone wanting to compete can stop by the Oct. 12 market to purchase their supplies, then go home and bake their dessert, returning with it on the 19th to compete against other local bakers.
For those who make pies, the judging will begin at 10 a.m. Every other type of sweet treat will be entered into the fall dessert category, which has separate judging at 10:45 a.m.
All of the dishes entered in the competition will need to be covered upon arrival, and the winner of each of the categories will also receive a $50 gift certificate to the market and have their dessert recipe featured in the farmers market's newsletter.
Both of these food-related competitions take place at the Saturday, Oct. 19, Haney Farmers Market in Memorial Peace Park. Anyone wanting to compete in the tasting event can register by emailing haney@farmersandmore.org.
