The Maple Ridge Repair Cafe has helped bring thousands of items back to life, keeping them in family homes and out of landfills, and there are more than 3,200 other programs like this all around the world.
Soon, these Repair Cafes will get to celebrate their efforts as these programs both nationally and abroad prepare for International Repair Day on Oct. 19.
Ridge Meadows Recycling Society community engagement manager Leanne Koehn said that she is looking forward to being able to highlight the work done by not only the Maple Ridge Repair Cafe, but all the other Repair Cafe programs as well.
"The work done by Maple Ridge Repair Cafe volunteers is the embodiment of the phrase 'think global, act local' and it is very exciting to be part of this growing, grassroots global movement," said Koehn.
So far in 2024, the Maple Ridge Repair Cafe has successfully repaired more than 360 items, putting it in the top 10 of all Repair Cafes in the world, according to Repair Monitor. And this number is expected to rise even more, with two more events left before the end of the year.
The next one will be on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Memorial Peace Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
