Enthusiasts finding new disc golf course in Pitt Meadows

New seven-hole course constructed at Bonson Park

The new seven-hole disc golf course in Pitt Meadows is now completed and ready for play.

The city announced the construction of the facilities at Bonson Park in the middle of December.

The Fraser Valley Disc Golf Club, which has 3,700 members on its Facebook page, posted photos of the new site.

"Nice little beginner course, but make sure to bring waterproof footwear. There are some wet and muddy spots," advised page administrator Brad Henderson. "Who will get the first ace?"

On another social media page, a poster noted: "Short track in a city park. Lots of potential… looking forward to seeing the lines when the trees are lush, and once more trees are added."

The city determined the new amenity would be popular when it held a one-day pop-up disc golf event in August, and more than 130 people came to participate.

The city has a course at Thornhill Park as well, which opened in 2005. Disc golf, sometimes called frisbee golf, sees players throw their discs at a target basket, using rules not unlike golf. It's a popular sport in the U.S., where there are more than 7,000 courses, and according to Wikipedia Finland ranks second with 1,000 courses, and Canada third, with 360.

If there's a snowfall, kids need not worry. A major concern voiced to the city was the potential impact the new course would have on the popular sledding activities at the natural bowl at Bonson Park. However, the city promised the location of the disc golf holes will not be in the way of toboggans.

The city is asking park users for comments, concerns and questions, and the parks team can be reached at parksandrec@pittmeadows.ca
