There were four former Ridge Meadows Burrards minor lacrosse players on the roster of the Minto Cup Champion Coquitlam Adanacs.
The prestigious Junior A lacrosse championship tournament was held from Aug. 17 to 24 at the “Palace on Poirier” in Coquitlam.
Goaltender Jack Kask was the tournament MVP, Cody Malawsky was the final game MVP, and Ben Coghill and Jaxon Fridge were also part of the championship.
Malawsky, the son of hall-of-fame player and Vancouver Giants GM/coach Curt Malawsky, had 22 points over five games. He scored four goals and an assist in the final game.
Fridge, a defender, is the grandson of the late Ted Fridge who was the GM of the Junior and Senior Adanacs, and the son of Daren Fridge, who coached the Maple Ridge Burrards.
It was the first Minto Cup for the Adanacs since 2018, but their third in eight years.
The Adanacs started the round-robin portion of the tourney on Aug. 17 with a 10-8 win over the Raiders of Calgary, and then the next day they blasted the Port Coquitlam Saints 17-7. On Monday, Aug. 19, they suffered a 12-9 loss to Ontario's Orangeville Northmen.
After the round-robin, they faced the Northmen in a best-of-three series for the cup, and beat them 14-7 and 9-6 to win it on Aug. 23.
The Adanacs won the 2024 BC Junior A Lacrosse League championship in record-setting style, taking their 12th league championship since 2009 – an unprecedented run in Canadian lacrosse.
The Minto Cup has been awarded since 1901, and has been the trophy given to the top Junior A lacrosse team in Canada since 1937.
