Maple Ridge Burrards player Rhys Porteous has been drafted by the Vancouver Warriors of the National Lacrosse League (NLL).

Porteous was taken 32nd overall, in the third round of the 2024 NLL draft on Sept. 15.

The 22-year-old spent early 2024 at Manhattan University, appearing in nine games and registering two goals for the Jaspers.

The 5’10”, 160-pound forward also suited up for the Burrards of Western Lacrosse Association (WLA), notching 35 points (19-16-35) and two penalty minutes in 15 games, and 14 points (10-4-14) in four playoff games. He led the team in playoff goals.

Prior to his time in the WLA, the Delta native played three seasons in the BCJALL, scoring 92 points (48-44-92) in 39 games, and six points (2-4-6) in three playoff games.

“Rhys is a right-handed forward who has good feet and is really athletic,” said Curt Malawsky, the GM and head coach of the Warriors. “He gets to the middle of the floor and shoots the ball very well.”

The Burrards picked Porteous in the second round of the WLA draft in February of 2024. He has been an important part of a youth movement that saw the team return to the WLA playoffs and finish second in the standings in the past season.

The Warriors drafted a total of six players, with the other five being Johnathan Peshko fourth overall, Remo Schenato sixth overall, Josh Carlson 41st overall (round three), Kai George 61st overall (round five), and Cole Kastner 76th overall (round six).
