Curlers will once again be hitting the ice in Maple Ridge soon, with the Golden Ears Winter Club preparing to host its season opener in September.

Office manager Shannon Joanisse explained that the new season begins on Sept. 7, when the club will host its annual Western Summer Spiel.

"We have 20 teams participating in this year’s event, and we have fun on and off the ice," said Joanisse.

This tournament goes on for both the Saturday and Sunday, with the lounge open for people to come by and watch the action.

The following weekend will be the club's first open house of the season, with curling newcomers encouraged to come by and give the popular winter sport a try.

"We welcome all ages, all you need is clean runners and warm stretchy clothing," said Joanisse. "We provide all the equipment, and instructors will be on hand to help."

The open house will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Adults who would like to get into curling can also attend one of the Learn to Curl Clinics that the Golden Ears Winter Club are hosting on Sept. 19 and 26 from 7 to 9 p.m.

There is also a wide variety of other programs offered by the club for both adults and youth, with more information available at gewclub.ca.
