The Maple Ridge Lawn Bowling Club is getting set to begin its 30th anniversary season.
The grand opening event for the year is set for April 6, with a noon start that will include games and a social time.
The club is also hosting two Saturday open house events in opening month, on April 12 and 26, for people who would like to try lawn bowling. This event is aimed at potential new members, and there will be club members on hand to show them how to play the game, and all the features the club has to offer. The open houses will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who attend are asked to wear flat-soled footwear, with no heels.
Lawn bowling is designed as a fun and challenging sport that can be likened to curling on grass, because the bowls are biased to roll in an arc towards the jack. The basic skills of the sport can be picked up in a short time, and then improved with practice over time.
The local club was founded in 1995, and has more than 100 members who play regularly at the facilities at 11445 232nd St. Members also can compete in tournaments both locally and at many other clubs across the region and farther afield. There are weekly men's and women's games, and mixed lawn bowling.
Lionel Amery, a spokesperson for the club club, said they also have weekly card games, and other special celebrations.
