More than 100 martial artists gathered together to spend a full day on the mats – all in the name of curing cancer.
The annual Roll for a Reason fundraiser was once again hosted by Northwest Jiu-Jitsu Academy, with people coming from all over B.C. and even parts of the United States in order to participate in what owner Perry Bateson called the biggest Brazilian jiu-jitsu fundraiser in the Pacific Northwest.
"We had over 150 athletes on the mats representing 17 different schools from all around B.C. and the state of Washington," said Bateson.

Throughout the day, various demonstrations were given by well-known jiu-jitsu practitioners, including Nabil Salameh, Taylor and Nikki McCorriston, Scott Boudreau, and Brian J. Johnson.
Participants were also given plenty of time to hone their skills on the mat in both gi and nogi grappling, as well as make new connections in the jiu-jitsu community.
"Mr. Mikes served over 200 burgers for lunch, and Combat Cartel, Bushido Martial Arts, Revgear, and Grapple Guard Soap donated amazing door prizes," said Bateson.
While they were busy perfecting their craft, these martial artists were also helping to raise thousands of dollars for cancer care and research.
A total of more than $13,500 was raised at this year's Roll for a Reason, with all of the money going toward the BC Cancer Foundation.
