Steven Lecuyer is the second person to win the championship three years in a row.

The Meadow Gardens Golf Club in Pitt Meadows saw a bit of history made, as it hosted the COBRA PUMA Golf Assistants’ Championship on June 9 and 10.

Steven Lecuyer of Seymour Creek Golf Centre in North Vancouver won the event for the third straight time, joining Gerry Chatelian, the longtime head professional at Capilano Golf and Country Club as the only players to threepeat. It was a long time before the event saw a three-time champ, as Chatelain won the 1972, 1973 and 1974 BC Assistants' Championship.

“It’s really special to be able to win a tournament three times in a row. I’m feeling very grateful for the opportunity to play and to come out on top on this difficult golf course,” said Lecuyer. “It was a very up-and-down day; I fought hard and came back a couple times.”

Lecuyer entered the final round at Meadow Gardens tied for the lead with Cory Renfrew (Pacific Golf Academy) after firing a 5-under 67 in round one.

An early birdie on the second hole was encouraging, but his grip on contention was slipping after Lecuyer made back-to-back bogeys on the fourth and fifth holes to drop back. Zac Carson (Nicklaus North Golf Course) and Luke Bogdan (Ace Performance Centre) attacked the course, and Carson jumped out to a lead after going birdie-eagle to start his round. Then Bogdan enjoyed an eight-hole, five-birdie stretch to wrestle the lead from Carson.

But Lecuyer then birdied three of the next four holes and made the turn at two-under for the day. Meadow Gardens’ back-nine, presented challenges and adversity to competitors, but the defending champ finished at seven-under overall, giving him a three-stroke victory.

Carson and Matthew Daniel (Savage Creek Golf Club) tied as runners-up at four-under.

Meadow Gardens will be hosting the Meadow Gardens Open on July 5-6, the biggest 2-day stroke play championship in the province with over $120,000 in cash and prizes based on a full field. To learn more and to register see meadowgardensgolf.com.
