Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge athletes nominated for Sport BC honours

Wrestler and gymnast numbered among B.C.'s best amateur athletes

Two local athletes were nominees as Sport BC announced the finalists to be celebrated at the upcoming 57th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards, taking place on March 6 in Vancouver.

Maple Ridge Secondary wrestler Agnia Krakovska was nominated for female high school athlete of the year, and gymnast Brooklyn Lee-McMeeken of Pitt Meadows was nominated as junior female athlete of the year.

Krakovska had a great year, winning a gold medal at the U19 level at the 2024 Canadian Wrestling Championships in Mississauga, Ont. last April. The Grade 11 also won gold at provincials.

Lee-McMeeken took second in Junior Women's Trampoline and first in Junior Women's Double Mini Trampoline at the 2024 Canadian Gymnastics Championships.

The awards night will be hosted by CBC’s Scott Russell, to recognize the province’s best in amateur sport including athletes, coaches, teams, and officials.

Each finalist was nominated by their provincial organization, high school, college, or university. The selection committee, led by long-serving chair Bernie Pascall, included a diverse group of highly experienced B.C. sport leaders and media members.

An additional six awards will be presented at the ceremony, including the Best of BC, KidSport BC Community Champion, Harry Jerome Comeback, Daryl Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award and In Her Footsteps Honourees and the Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation Award recipient.

“The Athlete of the Year Awards is a true celebration of sport in our province," said Sport BC’s president and CEO, Rob Newman.

The finalists will be honoured at the event and represent exceptional efforts and accomplishments in 2024, he added.

"We congratulate our finalists and the organizations they represent. We look forward to celebrating as a sector together on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. The finalists represent 29 sports from communities all throughout B.C. demonstrating the collective strength of our province’s sport sector.”
