Many of the most common – and important – elements in our homes are things we often think little about. Plywood is the perfect example.

Commonly used both here at home and around the world, plywood is used for both structural and non-structural scenarios, including sub-flooring, wall and roof sheathing, and furniture manufacturing. Outside, you'll find specialty plywood used in marine settings, garden projects and so much more.

Despite its broad use, a variety of plywood misconceptions persist, likely because many don't understand exactly what it is, how it's made and the diversity of potential applications. To learn more, we chatted with the local experts at Smith Plywoods in Maple Ridge – the Lower Mainland's go-to experts for more than 70 years!

Myth 1: Plywood is weak and fragile – In fact, it's the complete opposite. Plywood is an engineered wood product created by gluing together multiple thin sheets of wood in high temperatures, with each ply, or layer, set perpendicular to adjacent layers. In some instances it's stronger and more durable than solid wood, the Smith team notes.
Naturally:wood, a comprehensive B.C. information resource developed by Forestry Innovation Investment, points out that "plywood can provide resistance to lateral forces such as wind and earthquake loads and form an integral component of the building envelope." Plywood's strength and versatility are exactly what make it a popular choice in building and remodelling.

Myth 2: All plywood is the same quality – Plywood comes in two different varieties – hardwood and softwood – and various grades (A, B, C, D, MR – moisture resistant), that help determine which product would best suit a particular project. Because different projects require different grades of plywood – determined by factors such as strength, moisture resistance, discolouration and defects – it's crucial to understand how the grading system works, and to shop with a knowledgeable supplier.

Myth 3: All plywood looks the same – A scan of the Smith Plywoods warehouse or website quickly dispels this misconception! If you're looking for a cost-effective way to introduce a luxurious wood look to your home or office, browse their samples of Calico Hickory, Plain Sliced Khaya, Quarter Cut Red Oak and other gorgeous veneers!

Myth 4: Plywood isn't waterproof – Plywood is suitable to both wet and dry conditions, with varieties having different levels of water resistance. For example, marine plywood, exterior plywood, aircraft plywood, structural plywood, flexible plywood, lumber core and overlaid plywood are designed to be water-resistant or even waterproof. Treated plywood is designed for underground applications and high-moisture areas.

Myth 5: Plywood and particleboard are the same – This is a common misconception, and even those who recognize a difference, may feel the two products are similar. In fact, they're nothing alike. Plywood is crafted from multiple thin sheets of wood at high temperature, creating an end product that is extremely durable and lightweight, without twisting and warping. Particleboard is made from wood particles and adhesive pressed together at high heat and can be useful for a variety of interior projects like cabinets, shelving or furniture.
