“Many people aren’t sure how to clean their blinds without damaging them. The trick is to start with the gentlest method and only go deeper if needed.” says Clay Tierney of Budget Blinds.

Window coverings do more than filter light – they help define the feel of a space. But whether you’ve got faux wood blinds or fabric shades, regular cleaning is key to keeping them fresh, functional and long-lasting.

“Many people aren’t sure how to clean their blinds without damaging them,” says Clay Tierney, owner of Budget Blinds of Tri-Cities & Ridge Meadows. “The trick is to start with the gentlest method and only go deeper if needed.”

Not all window treatments are created equal and the material matters. With the right tools and techniques, you can remove dust, fingerprints and smudges without affecting the look or lifespan of your shades.

  • Start with dusting: Use a microfibre cloth or vacuum with a brush attachment to gently lift away dust. This works well for vinyl, aluminum, faux wood, and even fabric shades. Regular dusting is your first line of defence.
  • For light soil or fingerprints: Use a soft sponge or cloth lightly dampened with warm water or a mild soap solution. Always test in a hidden area first, especially on fabric shades. Extra care should be taken with blackout fabrics, as they can crease permanently.
  • For stubborn spots: A mild detergent diluted in water can help, especially for roller shades or faux wood. Blot, don’t rub – and skip strong detergents or spot removers, which may cause discolouration.
  • Avoid washing or submerging: Blackout fabrics, delicate sheers, decorative trims and natural materials shouldn’t be washed or cleaned ultrasonically. When in doubt, consult the manufacturer or seek professional cleaning.

“A lot of our products are designed with easy-clean materials that resist dust and stains,” Tierney adds. “That makes upkeep a lot more manageable – especially for busy households.”

If your blinds are showing signs of age, it might be time for an upgrade. Budget Blinds of Tri-Cities & Ridge Meadows offers stylish, low-maintenance solutions tailored to your home.
