Use plywood to create an attractive raised container for your patio – you can even add wheels to make it easier to move.

As we look for new ways to get more from our gardens, plywood can be a creative, affordable and sustainable solution, whether for raising those plant beds to a more manageable height or using vertical space to maximize our growing area.

No matter what you dream for your garden, the first step is visiting Smith Plywoods in Maple Ridge, especially when you pair the right materials with the experience of the team at the Lower Mainland's only dedicated plywood lumberyard. Not only will they help select the right plywood for your project, they have all the tools, fasteners, adhesives and more to make your vision a reality.

So as we get busy outside, here are some ideas for getting growing with plywood in your gardening projects:

1. Raised garden beds – Build simple rectangular or square raised beds using plywood sheets. Reinforce the corners with wooden stakes or metal brackets, then line the inside with landscape cloth and fill with soil and compost for flowers, vegetables, or herbs.

2. Vertical plywood planters – Attach small plywood boxes or pockets to a fence or wall for a vertical garden that makes the most of otherwise unused space. Use a grid-style plywood panel with mounted planters for herbs or succulents. Stagger plywood shelves with drainage holes for potted plants.

3. Plywood window boxes – Planter boxes can be a great way to brighten up a window and enjoy blooms from inside and out! Build shallow, long planters to attach beneath windows then add a waterproof liner to prevent rot. Paint or stain to suit your decor or to add a decorative touch.

Plywood can be a great way to use some of the vertical space in your garden. Stain or paint it to blend in or to stand out with a splash of colour.

4. Mobile plywood planter carts – Add wheels to your plywood planter for a movable garden – useful for patios or balconies where space is limited, or when you need to adjust for sun and heat.

5. Plywood trellis with integrated planters – Combine a vertical trellis with small planters at the base – these are ideal for climbing plants like sweet peas, beans, peas and cucumbers.

6. Plywood herb spiral – Construct a spiral-shaped plywood structure for a herb garden. Fill with soil, and plant according to differing plant needs, with sun-loving plants on top, for example, and those preferring shade on the bottom.

7. Plywood A-frame planter – Create an A-frame structure with plywood shelves for potted plants – this can work well for succulents or small ornamentals.
