Fortis crews clean up after a natural gas leak just west of 240th St. along McClure Ave. Wednesday afternoon.

Thirty homes were evacuated in east Maple Ridge Wednesday morning after a construction crew hit a gas pipe line.

The six-centimetre Fortis B.C. pipe ruptured in the yard of a home under construction on McLure Drive around 11:15 a.m., forcing the evacuation of homes on surrounding streets.

District of Maple Ridge spokesperson Fred Armstrong said fire crews and paramedics remained on standby until the neighbourhood was deemed safe.

Although most were not home, residents were allowed back into their houses after an hour and half.
