Case counts hit new weekly high of 880 in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows

More boosters and vaccination rates climb among children

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows set a new high for COVID-19 cases in one week, according to the latest COVID-19 case mapping from the BC Centre for Disease Control.

With the Omicron variant case counts have spiked, and the two cities just posted 880 reported cases for the week of Jan. 2-8. That’s up from the 808 cases the week prior, which was also a new high.

Surrey’s case counts also continued to rise from 2,619 to 2,960 in the same time frame. Other surrounding cities dropped, with Langley going from 936 to 708, Tri-Cities from 2,055 to 1,843, Abbotsford from 604 to 314 and Mission from 198 to 84.

Based on the experiences in South Africa and the UK, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry speculates that the fifth wave, fueled by Omicron, could soon level off and decline.

Vaccination progress in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, as of Tuesday, shows the number of number of people aged 50-plus who have received their third dose rose from 39 per cent to 46 per cent in a week.

Also:

• 76 per cent of those 70-plus have received their third dose.

• 43 per cent of those in the 5-11 age group have received their first dose.

• 85 per cent of those in the 12-17 age group have a second dose.

• 88 per cent of those aged 18-plus have a second dose.
