One man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries Wednesday morning following a two-vehicle crash in Maple Ridge.

Around 3:10 a.m., a pickup truck travelling east collided with a highway work truck in the 23800-block of Lougheed Highway.

Cpl. Dale Somerville said the work vehicle was on the road while a crew was painting at the location.

Lougheed Highway was shut down for four hours as the Maple Ridge Fire Department removed the driver from the pickup truck, and police investigated.

The driver of the pickup was airlifted to hospital, while a man who was driving the work truck was treated at Ridge Meadows Hospital for minor injuries.

Police have yet to identify the pickup truck driver, who remains in serious condition.

"At this point in the investigation, police suspect speed and alcohol are contributing factors in this crash," said Somerville.

Lougheed Highway has since reopened to traffic.

Police remind motorists to be mindful of road work and traffic control crews.
